The Cubs and Art

I was at the Art Institute of Chicago today with the wife.  One of the unintended benefits of being sporadically employed is all the random free time you have lying around.  And one of the benefits of being a Chicago resident is the discount/free days at the city museums.  So hooray for free crap.  Whenever you’re done checking out our first Dreamcast, read ahead and see some Cubs stuff in art form…

I’m not a big art buff.  I do appreciate nice pictures, and I also have a wry and sarcastic sense of humor so I approach art in museums with a hint of Mystery Science Theater thrown in.  Here are some examples, and forgive me if I don’t actually know the names of the paintings…I also have a pretty selective memory.

Check out these guys.  I think this is one of a bajillion different paintings of Jesus Christ and one of his disciples.  Or maybe it’s Jesus and a Jesus clone.  I have no idea.  But it did remind me of Jeff Samardzija and to an extent, James Russell…though I don’t think James grew a beard.  However, neither of them seem to want to get a haircut, so there you go.

I don’t recall who painted this either.  I just know it reminded me of Travis Wood.  He’s even left-handed…note the palette in his right hand, though you can barely see a drawing implement in his left hand (if at all).

HoHoKam!

These pots are made by the Native Americans of the HoHoKam tribe, who were indigenous to what is now Southwest Arizona. You may be familiar with the name “HoHoKam” as it is the spring home of the Chicago Cubs until they open the new Mesa complex next spring.

On a related note, pitchers and catchers report to Mesa on February 10. Three more days…
