Welp…the Cubs didn’t win on Wednesday.

There was what was termed a “Little League grand slam” late in the game when Christian Villanueva threw a ball away. Sometimes things just happen. But it’s spring training, you kind of expect silly things to happen anyway.

The Cubs visit the Indians for their Thursday game.  Lineups when we get them.  For now, follow along our countdown lineup as we’re less than a month to Opening Day.

Underappreciated Players You End Up Missing

The funny thing about Cubs fans, and sports fans in general…you never really know what you have until it’s gone.  Presented without comment…

Derrek Lee: as a Cub — .298/.378/.524, two MVP-caliber seasons and several other really good ones.

DerrekLeeAramis Ramirez: as a Cub — .294/.356/.531, steadiest third baseman for the Cubs since Ron Santo.

Aramis Ramirez, Ryan HaniganAlfonso Soriano: as a Cub — .264/.317/.495, 181 HR as a Cub, 20+ HR for every full season as a Cub until he was traded to the New York Yankees last season.  Career numbers as a Cub eerily similar to another Cubs favorite.

SorianoCarlos Zambrano: as a Cub — 1826.2 innings pitched, including five straight seasons of 200+ innings.  Workhorse and rotation stalwart after Kerry Wood and Mark Prior went down.  Second all-time in Cubs strikeout leaders behind Fergie Jenkins.  Contributed to these stats:

Their time came and went, but they will still be missed.

25 more days until Opening Day in Pittsburgh.
