After taking a break on the minor league recaps to focus a little more closely on the Rule 4 Draft last week, there is plenty of good news to catch up on over the last couple of weeks in the system.  Kris Bryant continues to defend his Southern League Player of the Week crown.  On the injury front…

Jorge Soler is also working out in Mesa, but is expected to be a little longer in returning from this hamstring strain than the others he’s had this year.

Speaking of Mesa…this happened since we last got together…

The big one is 17 year old Eloy Jimenez, towering over Manny Ramirez.

Injuries of Note: Lendy Castillo (7 Day DL), Cael Brockmeyer (7 Day DL), C.J. Edwards (7 Day DL, Shoulder),  Giuseppe Papaccio (7 Day DL), Ivan Pineyro (7 Day DL, Right Forearm Strain), Hunter Cervenka (7 Day DL), Jen-Ho Tseng (7 Day DL, Shoulder), Pierce Johnson (7 Day DL, Left Calf Strain), Jorge Soler (7 Day DL, Hamstring Strain), Daniel Canela (7 Day DL), Marcos Mateo (7 Day DL, Lower Back Strain), Gerardo Concepcion (7 Day DL, Foot), Yao-Lin Wang (7 Day DL), Lars Anderson (7 Day DL), Edgar Gonzalez (7 Day DL), Jonathan Sanchez (7 Day DL), Corey Black (7 Day DL), Dillon Maples (7 Day DL), Duane Underwood (7 Day DL), Jose Arias (7 Day DL), Will Remillard (7 Day DL), Nathan Maldonado (60 Day DL)

Boise Hawks
Record This Season:

The Short Season Hawks start on Friday the 13th, featuring 2014 1st Round (4th Overall) Pick, Kyle Schwarber.  Also making the trip to Boise is 19 year old pitcher Erick Leal, acquired for the scrappy, Tony Campana.

Kane County Cougars
Record This season: 44-22, 1st Place (+8.5) MWL West, Clinched 1st Half Division Championship

The Cougars have been rolling all season, and have won their division in the 1st half.  With that happening, there is a good change we see Kyle Schwarber in Kane County before the end of the season and into the Midwest League playoffs.

Daytona Cubs
Record This Season: 25-39, 5th Place (-19.5) FSL North

It’s been a 1st half to forget for the defending Florida State League Champions, but they have not gone without standout performers.  Namely, Felix Pena on the mound and Bijan Rademacher at the plate.

Tennessee Smokies
Record This Season: 31-34, 2nd Place (-11.0) Southern League North

The prospect heavy Smokies have not disappointed, garnering six All-Star selections, led by the ever-so-dreamy Kris Bryant.  The starting rotation has been a disappointment in the lone sense that they have battled injuries from the outset of the season, and have been missing the two biggest names, Edwards and Johnson, for much of the season.

Iowa Cubs
Record This Season: 33-30, 3rd Place (-1.0) PCL American North

The I-Cubs have been in a battle for their division lead for much of the season, dropping to 3rd place, but remaining only one game out of the top slot.  Javier Baez missed some time since the last recap after being hit on the wrist, and has cooled off from the torrid hot streak he was on, but his numbers continue to climb after a brutal start.  He’s up to .230/.290/.439 with 9 HRs and 31 RBI…all of which is to say, let’s stay calm in regard to Baez.

About Andy

Sometimes I write stuff about the Cubs. Sometimes it's even good. But don't get your hopes up. Basically, my writing is like the pre-2016 Chicago Cubs.
