Cubs Option Neil Ramirez; Give Him a Breather (updated)

In an interesting move this afternoon before game time, the Chicago Cubs optioned fireballing relief pitcher Neil Ramirez back to Iowa and recalled Blake Parker.

With Carrie Muskat saying that the demotion of Ramirez is not performance based, one can begin speculating about his baseball future. I do not see a trade of Ramirez coming, in fact the Cubs could very well be considering a new role for him at the Major League level. While with the Major League Cubs, Ramirez has been coming out of the pen, and looking great doing so with a WHIP of .929. He posted 36 strike outs while walking only 10 in only 28 innings pitched. However, while in the minor leagues (before this season in Iowa) Ramirez was primarily a starting pitcher. Perhaps the Cubs want to stretch him out to see if he can translate his success as a reliever in the Majors and become a dominating starter for the Cubs next season. Neil This is all just speculation, but worth a thought. There is no guarantee he will be as dominating as a starter as he is as a reliever. Some pitchers are better as starters, while others are more dominating as relievers. Time to figure out which Ramirez is. UPDATE: Looks like they just wanted to give him an extended break and only called up Parker so they had a full bullpen.
