South Bend Cubs Updates from the week of December 15, 2014:
On Wednesday, December 17, 2004, the South Bend Cubs announced their coaching staff for the 2015 season. They are:
Manager: Jimmy Gonzalez – this will be Gonzalez’s second season in the organization, managing last year in Arizona for the Cubs’ Rookie League team. He also served as a hitting coach in 2013. Gonzalez played for 14 seasons in minor league baseball, having been drafted in 1991. The 41 year old is a former right handed catcher originally from Hartford, Connecticut.
Pitching coach: Brian Lawrence – Lawrence was pitching coach last season for the Boise Hawks. The 6 foot tall from Texas is 38 years old. He played six years in MLB and was a right-handed pitcher with the Padres and Mets.
Hitting coach: Jesus Feliciano – 35 year old Feliciano also worked in Boise last year as their hitting coach. He is a left handed, former outfielder and pinch hitter who is originally from Puerto Rico.
Other positions include: Osmin Melendez as assistant coach and Jonathan Fierro as athletic trainer. Melendez was with Mesa last year and managed the Cubs Venezuela rookie league team in 2013. Fierro was in Kane County last year and Boise in 2013.
Earlier today, the SB Cubs announced that Darin Pritchett will do play by play for the 2015 season. More info can be found on the official website here. Pritchett is currently sports director at WSBT Radio where he has worked for 16 years. He also announces Notre Dame hockey games and will continue his other duties for WSBT. A 7 time winner of the Indiana Associated Press Play-by-Play broadcaster of the year award, he also helped WSBT’s sports team win 3 Indiana Broadcasters Association awards. ALL South Bend Cubs games for the 2015 season will be broadcast live on 960 am, 96.1 fm as well as online.
Opening day will be April 9, 2015 at Four Winds Field in South Bend where the SB Cubs will take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods. The “baby Cubs” will play some exhibition games prior to opening the season, including one against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish baseball team on April 7, 2015. The 7-inning exhibition game will be played at Four Winds Field.
