South Bend Cubs: series updates

The other day I promised I’d get my updates, well, up to date. So here is what’s up with the South Bend Cubs:

  • After the Opening series at home, the Cubs went on the road and their first stop was Ohio to take on the Dayton Dragons. The baby Cubs started out well, taking the first game 8-3 but lost the next two.
    • In game one, Zach Hedges (@Zhedges12) got the win and Jasvir Rakkar (@Rakkar_J27), who is now with Myrtle Beach, got credit for a hold. Rashad Crawford was 2-2 with 3 RBI, 3 runs and 2 walks. Jason Vosler (@Jvos22) went 3-5 scoring twice.
    • In game two, the Cubs were trailing from the beginning as Trevor Clifton (@Tcliff25) got the loss. Cael Brockmeyer (@BigBrock9) went 2-4 with 1 RBI and Chesny Young was 2-4 with 1 run.
    • In game three, the Cubs had the lead going into the 8th inning but ended up losing 3-2. Tommy Thorpe got the loss. Brockmeyer was 1-3 with a double. Trey Martin (@T_Martin_26) was 2-4 with a double and a triple. Gleyber Torres (@Torres_Gleyber) went 2-3 with 1 walk and 1 RBI. For the series, the baby Cubs left 20 runners on base and were 7-26 with runners in scoring position.
  • After leaving Dayton, the SB Cubs traveled back to Indiana to take on the Fort Wayne Tin Caps. They lost the first two games before salvaging the series with a win in game three.
    • In game one against the Tin Caps, Jake Stinnett (@jstinnett7) took the loss. The Cubs rallied after being down 9-0 in the fourth but it wasn’t enough as they lost 10-7. Gioskar Amaya was 2-3 with a double, Cael Brockmeyer (@BigBrock9) was 2-4 also with a double. Brockmeyer also scored once, had 1 RBI and took a walk. Trey Martin (@T_Martin_26) went 2-5, also scoring once and getting 1 RBI.
    • In game two, the Cubs were up 5-2 going into the 8th inning but ultimately lost 7-6. Relief pitcher Francisco Carillo got the loss as Fort Wayne scored 5 runs staring in the 8th. Amaya and Vosler both doubles and Jesse Hodges (@CCHodgy) homered and had 3 RBI in the losing effort.
    • The Cubs left Fort Wayne on a positive note as they won the third game 11-3. The winning pitcher was Erick Leal who pitched 5 innings giving up 6 hits, 1 run, 2 walks with 3 Ks. Cael Brockmeyer continued his hot streak going 3-4 with 1 run, 1 RBI and 2 walks. Jeffrey Baez was 3-5 with a run. For this series the Cubs left 24 runners on base (12 in the finale alone) and were 13 for 49 with runners in scoring position. While the percentage isn’t great, it’s nice to see that they had a runner in scoring position almost 50 times.
  • The Cubbies came home after their 6 game game road trip to meet the Great Lakes Loons in South Bend. Unfortunately, the baby Cubs only won a single game in this series as well.
    • Game one against the Loons started out well. It was a sold out crowd and we had lovely weather. The Cubs were up 4-1 going into the 9th inning but (stop me if you’ve heard this before), the relief pitchers let the Loons come back to win the game. James Farris gave up 4 runs in the top of the 9th innning, getting both a blown save and the loss. Chesny Young was the player of the game (winning a $25 gift certificate from Le Peep restaurant) after going 1-4 with a run, an RBI and a triple. Trey Martin (@T_Martin_26) was my vote for POG as he was 2-4 with a double, 1 run and 1 RBI. Martin also played a brilliant game defensively in left field.
    • In game two the Cubs also had a lead late in the game but lost it. Carillo gave up 4 runs in the top of the 9th as the Cubbies lost 4-1, earning a blown save and the loss. Gleyber Torres (@Torres_Gleyber) went 2-3 as did Jesse Hodges (@CCHodgy) who also had 1 RBI.
    • Game three was much better. Ryan Williams (@rhynowilliams) pitched 5.2 inning, giving up just 7 hits, 2 walks and striking out 3 to earn the win. David Garner (@DG_token16) made his SB Cubs debut and earned a hold for his 1.1 innings with 1 hit and 1 K. James Norwood (@Sir_KingJames) earned THE FIRST SAVE OF THE YEAR after pitching 2 complete inning with no hits and 3Ks. Chesny Young was 2-3 and Jesse Hodges (@CCHodgy) again had a good game, going 2-4 with 3 RBI.
  • The next series was also at home as the Lake County Captains came into town for three games. It started on a sour note but the series would finish on some very high ones.
    • In game one, Jake Stinnett (@jstinnett7) started and pitched well, although the “questionable” ball/strike calls at home helped him accrue 5 walks. Stinnett went 5 full inning, giving up only 2 hits, 1 unearned run and 4 Ks along with those 5 walks. Jordan Minch earned a hold for his 2.0 inning with 0 hits, 1 earned run and 2 walks. The Cubs were up 2-1 going into the 7th but then the Captains scored 1 run in the 7th, 1 in the 8th and 2 in the 9th off of Francisco Carrillo to get the win. Charcer Burks (@charcerburks) went 2-4 with 1 RBI and Justin Marra hit his first homer of the year in the 3rd inning.
    • Game two was much more fun to watch, listen and (I imagine) play in. The Cubs offense exploded for 16 runs against Lake County as Jeremy Null (@nulldozer46) went 6 full innings. He gave up only 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks and struck out 4. Tommy Thorpe got a 3 inning save though he gave up 6 hits and 3 run (only 1 earned). The Cubs combined for 20 hits including another homer by Justin Marra, doubles by Cael Brockmeyer, Jesse Hodges and Trey Martin. Chesny Young went 3-3 with 4 runs and Charcer Burks was 2-3 with 1 run and 2 walks. South Bend scored runs in every inning except the 6th and 7th, including 5 runs in the 4th inning and 4 runs in the 5th.
    • I was worried that the Cubbies might have used up all of their runs in game two but thankfully I was wrong (hey, it happens!). Game three was another victory, this one by a score of 10-0. They scored 6 runs in the 3rd inning, 3 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th while shutting out the Captains. Erick Leal got the win with 5.0 innings pitched with only 3 hits, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. Tyler Ihrig (@CaptainWet) got the save. Yasiel Balaguert (@Yasiel1256) got a double, a triple and 3 RBI. For games two and three, the SB Cubs scored 26 runs on 32 hits.
  • The SB Cubs are currently 7-8 and start a series at Fort Wayne on Friday, 4/24. After Fort Wayne, they travel to play the West Michigan Whitecaps.
