Shut up, Opening Day Eve is totally a thing.  Anyway, the South Bend Cubs named pitcher Preston Morrison as their starter for Thursday’s Opening Night game versus the West Michigan Whitecaps . Morrison is a 22 year old righty from Waxhaw, North Carolina. The 6’ 2”, 185 pounder was an 8th round draft pick in 2015 out of Texas Christian University. 664182 After a month of contract negotiations, Morrison was signed on July 10, 2015, assigned to the Eugene Emeralds on July 11 and pitched in relief the next day.

Morrison’s record with the Cubs’ Short A club was 1-1 with the win coming as a reliever and the loss as a starter. He started two games in July and two in August. As a starter, Morrison threw 10 innings, giving up 5 hits, 1 earned run and walking 1 batter. He struck out 15 batters and opposing hitters batted just .143 off him.

Morrison also pitched in relief throughout his time in Eugene. In his six relief appearances, Morrison tallied 12.1 innings, gave up 10 hits, 1 earned run, walked 2 batters and struck out 15. Opposing batters hit .213 off him as a reliever.

He finished the season in Eugene with 30 strikeouts, a 0.81 ERA, 22.1 innings, 15 hits, 2 earned runs and 3 walks. Morrison did not hit a batter all season or allow any home runs.

Although all his numbers are nice, Morrison was more effective as a starter so it’s not surprising that he’ll start for the South Bend Cubs. He reportedly has “a lot of deception” with his sidearm delivery along with “excellent command and control”.

In other SB Cubs news, there is a new place to watch the games as the SB Cubs added a seating area on to the Performance Center; there is some “green stuff” on part of the outfield wall; and there are new menu items including a Deep Fried Mac and Cheese Sandwich (!!!), a Porknado, poutine, funnel cakes and something called “The Studebaker Special” which is a glazed donut with cream cheese frosting, bacon, strawberry jalapeno jam and candied jalapenos. Full coverage of this breaking news can be found online at And you KNOW my daughter is going to have us try all of the new items so I’ll let you know how amazing they are.  Thanks and Go Cubs!
