One of the best things about attending South Bend Cubs games is that you get to see top prospects at the beginning of their careers. After enjoying Eloy Jimenez last season and Ian Happ the year before, we’re curious to learn “What top prospects are starting the season in South Bend?”
- Right handed pitcher Dylan Cease, the Cubs #3 prospect, was acquired in the 6th round of the 2014 draft. The 21-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery shortly after he signed with the Cubs. He spent last season with the Eugene Emeralds, pitching 44 2/3 innings with a 2.22 ERA and 66 strikeouts.
- D.J. (Darryl James) Wilson is the Cubs #9 prospect. The 20-year-old outfielder also spent last season in Eugene, batting .257 in 64 games. Wilson is from Canton, Ohio and was the Cubs 4th round pick in the 2015 draft.
- The Cubs #14 prospect is Jose Paulino, who will start the year on the DL for the SB Cubs. The 6’2” Dominican appeared in 7 games for the SB Cubs in 2016 and was named the Chicago Cubs minor league pitcher of the month for July.
- Isaac Paredes, the Cubs #18 prospect, hails from Mexico and is only 18 years old. The infielder joined the SB Cubs for 3 games last season after 47 games in Arizona. In rookie ball, Paredes batted .305 with a .443 slugging percentage and .802 OPS.
The South Bend Cubs open the season at home on Saturday, April 8th at 7:05 pm. Tickets are available and fireworks will follow the game. In other news, the SB Cubs just announced the naming right to their Performance Center, Andrew Berlin is developing the land around Four Winds Field and Andre Dawson and Bill Buckner are coming to Four Winds Field.
