Today, it was announced that the BBWAA elected Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, and Craig Biggio to the Hall of Fame.  No problem.  They are all very deserving of enshrinement.  It is the self-congratulatory sanctimony of the writers that makes this day less joyous than it should be. Integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team

Those are words that are in Rule 5 of the BBWAA Hall of Fame rules for voting.  The entire rule states: “5. Voting: Voting shall be based upon the player’s record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.”
